Feeding My Community

Process

This is meant to be a group project that requires collaboration and teamwork.  Each of you have different strengths and talents, so build upon those to divide the tasks and complete the assignment.

Step 1

What is a community garden?  Understand what it is you will be designing.  Look for examples of successful gardens in other communities, what makes them successful?  Here are a couple examples to get you started:

Community Garden YouTube Video                  Community Garden Checklist

Where is the best place in your community to put a community garden?  Defend your decision for your chosen location.  Will this location be accessible to all people?  Does it have access to water?  Who will be using your garden?  Is it located near the people doing the gardening?

Look at your community from a birdseye view       Tips on starting a garden          Video about Community Gardening

What grows best in your area?  Will you grow fruit and vegetables?  Should you include some flowers?  (Flowers can bring value to a garden, tell me why for extra points)  What kind of soil is needed?

USDA Recommendations                        Vegetables that grow in OH

Step 2

Make a list of people that need to support your garden in order for it to be successful.  Who needs to help with this project?  Who owns the property youve selected?  Is there a Garden Club in your area that you could partner with?  How will you pay for the expenses?  How will you recruit people to participate?  Who will take care of the garden?  (Pull the weeds, water, plant & harvest)

Video about things to consider when you start your garden

Talk to adults around you and share your ideas, find out what questions they might have and look for answers to those questions.  The more questions you can gather and answer, the better your presentation will be.  For example:  Your father might ask who gets the tomatoes that are being grown?  Your neighbor might ask what she has to do to have a spot in the garden?

How much will it cost to build and operate your garden?  Where will the money come from?

Step 3

Create a presentation to convince town council to approve the creation of a community garden.  This presentation  can be in the form of a display board, a power point or a video.   You will give your presentation to the class as a way to ensure you are ready for town council.

Your presentation must include a journal of all the information you have gathered to serve as a reference for building a garden.  Be sure the name(s) of the people in your group that contributed in each category.  The journal should include a page (or more) for at least the following:

Why does your area need a community garden?

Where will the garden be located?

Who will be able to use the garden and how will they get their space?

A diagram of the garden layout.

A list of all the people who need to be partners in this project - make note of those from whom who you have already received support.

A budget to build and operate your garden for 1 year, showing revenue and expenses.

A list of questions people have asked with the answers you have given.

A one-page summary of why town council should approve this garden project.

Congratulations!!  You have begun a project that you can really make happen.  You can now improve the quality of life in your local area just because you completed this assignment.

GOOD JOB!!
