  1. Pre-reading strategy: As a group, discuss the cover and title of the book. Predict what the book will be about.
  2. During reading: Read Hoot, by Carl Hiaasen. Apply reading strategies to assist you with reading comprehension and understanding the events taking place in the book. Ask questions about what you don't understand. Remember to use your reader's notebook to jot down ideas or notes. Answer the following the questions in your reader's notebook as you read the novel:
  3. What would you do if you were Roy? Why?    
  4. Why do you think Beatrice allowed Roy to find out about her brother, Mullet Fingers?
  5. Do you think Mother Paula’s All-American Pancake Houses, Inc. had the right to build its restaurant on the property? Explain your answer.
  6. Officer Delinko wanted to get promoted at all cost. Why do you think he didn’t arrest Mullet Fingers in the end?
  7. After reading: Group Project- Research facts on the internet about burrowing owls. Click here to help you get started on this project.
  8. Create a PowerPoint presentation showcasing your new knowledge gained about burrowing owls. Be sure to include the answers to the student activity sheet above.                                        
  9. Individual Project- Select one of the themes from the novel: protecting and conservation of wildlife and natural environment, corruption, and bullying. Research facts online about your selected theme. Reflect on the information researched.
  10. Using Word, type a 2-page research paper on the theme you selected. Be sure to include how this theme is relevant to you or to your environment. Your document should be typed, double-spaced, 12-inch font, and not exceed 2 pages. Cite your sources.
