Helping Children Get Started With Printmaking

Paint hands and feet and then "print' them on paper.
Point out and discuss examples of repeated design in clothing, wrapping paper, and wallpaper in which objects appear again and again, up and down and across the whole material.
Have children print repeat designs using found objects, such as a sponge, rubber eraser, stick, and bottle cap, or natural materials, such as leaves, twigs, stones, and bark.
Soap is an easy material for even the younger child to handle. First, the teacher levels the surface of the soap block by shaving with a straight knife blade.
Ink the soap with tempera paint using a paintbrush or roll paint on with a brayer.
