Process

  • Paint hands and feet and then "print' them on paper.
  • Point out and discuss examples of repeated design in clothing, wrapping paper, and wallpaper in which objects appear again and again, up and down and across the whole material.
  • Have children print repeat designs using found objects, such as a sponge, rubber eraser, stick, and bottle cap, or natural materials, such as leaves, twigs, stones, and bark.
  • Soap is an easy material for even the younger child to handle. First, the teacher levels the surface of the soap block by shaving with a straight knife blade.
  • Ink the soap with tempera paint using a paintbrush or roll paint on with a brayer.
