Process

Part One-  In your group of four, vote on  a team leader.  Choose one person to be the book cover illustrator, one person to be the fable writer, one portrait designer, and  investigate your author at the link below:

http://www.randomhouse.com/kids/lionni/

After you have done your research,  your portrait designer will choose one large piece of construction paper and create a border along the edges of the construction paper.  Leave enough space to staple a piece of notebook paper in the center for your team leader to write five facts and a specific reason why your friends would enjoy this author.  This will be your open-mind portrait to hang in our gallery located in our book corner.   Remember, you want to encourage your classmates to study your author, so include interesting facts in your open-mind portrait.  You want other students to know what your author is all about.  Hang finished portrait on the wall in the book corner on the wall marked Gallery with tape from the teacher desk.

While the open-mind portrait is being worked on, the fable writer and book cover illustrator can stay on the above link and click on the activities tab.  You will print one copy of the create your own mouse activity.  Leo Lionni uses many mice in his fables and you can make one or more of your characters a mouse in the fable you will write.  You may take a vote to name the mouse.     Each person in the group may design another  character  to include in your fable.  If you decide to have a family of mice, you may print more copies.  Think about where the setting of the story will take place.  Brainstorm with your classmates and write down your ideas on a fresh piece of notebook paper.  Cut out and put together your first mouse.  The cover illustrator can color the mouse and place it in the file until part three.    Keep all work in the file marked Author Study-Leo Lionni on the counter by the classroom door.

As a group, click on the link below and listen to the story of Swimmy.  Notice the artwork used for the story.  Pay close attention to the colors, characters, and background.  As a group, predict what you think a fable story is.  Your fable writer can make notes  and each of you may sketch a sample drawing to help you remember this story.  Keep all work in the file marked Author Study-Leo Lionni on the counter by the classroom door.

Part Two-  You will read three more books by Leo Leonni:  Frederick,   Nicholas, Where Have You Been?    and The Green Tail Mouse- What's Real? What's Not?

Click on the link below to listen to the story about Frederick.

Buddy read the last two books together located in our book corner.
As a group, and after you have read and all four books, define what a fable means and what it looks like in a book.  The team leader may write this definition on a separate piece of notebook paper and place it in your author study file.

Now it is time for the Fable Writer to begin using the group ideas to start an original fable.
Click on the link below to get some ideas to begin your fable if you are stuck.
Click on the spinner to get your first idea.   You can change whatever character the spinner chooses to an animal for your fable.
You can also choose a setting that is not on this web-site.
Remember to revise and edit as a group.

The team leader, portrait designer, and book cover illustrator may go to the file marked author study and lay out any characters you have decided to use in your fable.  Now is the time to make sure you all agree on how many characters in your fable, the message, and who is the main character.

Click on the link below to print the character graphic organizer on page 27.  This will help you to create your characters for your fable.

The book cover illustrator needs to begin sketching a design for the front cover of your fable because you will put the whole book together in Part Three.
Choose different pieces of paper to use in your collage.

Part Three- Final Project/Group Fable
By now,  your group should have decided on a message for your fable, (example: treat others as you would like to be treated,  new things aren't always the best.)
Your group should have decided on a setting and what your character's names are and what they look like.

As a group, decide what art techniques you would like to use.  Do you want to do a border on each page?  What colors will you use?  Will you use a collage technique?  How about sponge painting?  Click on the link below to review the author's artistic style.  Sponges, paints, and colored pencils are on the back table.

Book Cover Illustrator- complete the front and back cover.  Attach the definition of the fable on the back cover.  Make sure all student names are on the front cover.
Portrait Designer, Team Leader- place characters on pages in the appropriate order of the fable.  Check with Fable writer for final approval and then attach with glue sticks from the back table.  Leave space at the bottom of each page to attach the text.
Fable Writer- Type up text for each page or the fable.  Fable should be no more than six to eight pages long, using large construction paper for each page.

When all pages are designed and dry, have the fable writer attach the text to the bottom of each page.
Staple your book pages together and let the teacher know you are ready to display your fable in the book corner to share with the class.
