1st Hour:

Students will be divided into 3 equal groups of 5 to research the 7 ancient wonders of the world. The 7 ancient wonders of the world are:

o    The statue of Zeus
o    The Colossus of Rhodes
o    The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus
o    The Lighthouse of Alexandria
o    The Temple of Artemis
o    The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
o    The Pyramid of Giza

Students will have access to the following websites to conduct research:
-    http://www.history.com/topics/seven-ancient-wonders-of-the-world
-    http://www.unmuseum.org/wonders.htm
-    http://www.seven-wonders-world.com

Students will have 45 minutes to complete their research. Each student will be assigned a specific task to investigate the following facts about each wonder:
•    When it was created?
•    Why the wonder was created?
•    When, how, and why it was demolished?
•    Where it is located?
•    What descriptive details about the artifact are unique and make it a wonder of the world?

The following are the assigned roles of each detective:

1.    The Locator: This student will be responsible for identifying the location of all 7 wonders of the ancient world. This includes identifying details of the country where the wonder is located and what its surrounding waters and countries are. If any of the wonders have been relocated, this should as be investigated.
2.    The Creator: This student will be responsible for knowing why each wonder had been created. You should also know if there were any replicates of the wonder or if it was the first and only of its kind.
3.    The Descriptor: This student will be responsible for identifying the descriptive details of each wonder of the ancient world i.e. what it is made of, what it looks like etc.
4.    The Time Keeper: This student will be responsible for knowing the dates of creation of each wonder. This includes knowing the order of creation for each of the wonders i.e. which is oldest and which is youngest.
5.    The Demolisher: This student will be responsible for identifying when and if each of the wonders has been demolished, how, and why.

Each student will then need to regroup with their teammates to share information on the 7 ancient wonders. Each group will be responsible for knowing all of the important content of each wonder based on the above questions and assigned tasks.

2nd – 3rd Hour

Once all research has been completed, students will take part in playing the game Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?

To play the game:

Students will need to answer questions based on their research. There will be 4 rounds in total. The first two rounds will be questions based on the research, the 3rd round will be creation of a chart diagram, and the 4th round will be the final, bonus round. The team with the most crime bucks by the end of the game is the winner.

Game set up:

Students will need to remain in their assigned groups to participate in this game. There should be 3 desks arranged in the front of the classroom for students. This is where students will go to answer questions during each round. Students will be provided will cue cards with multiple choice answers. These cards will be prepared in advance by the teacher. Teacher will set up a point grid on the board. Each correct answer will be awarded 10 crime bucks (also known as points). As students earn points, the amounts should be added under each team so that a total score can be calculated at the end of each round. The total amount of crime bucks accumulated by the end of round 3 will determine the total amount of points each team will have available to wager in round 4. Teacher will also have 3 chart diagrams for the Diagram round of the game already prepared for each of the 3 teams. (See attachments for diagram)

Game play - Round 1 & 2:

Students will be called up based on their assigned tasks to answer the questions. Once the teacher asks the question, students will respond by holding up the cue card that they feel is the best answer to the question. Once all students respond to the question, the correct answer will be revealed and students who answered correctly will be awarded points to their team. Students are to return to their original seats once their round of questioning is completed and the next student is to go up. This is to continue for rounds one and two.

Round 3:

Each of the 3 groups will be provided with a blank graph diagram of the 7 ancient wonders. Students will need to work together to complete the graph. The information required on the chart includes names of the 7 wonders, the dates of creation and demolition, location, and description details of the 7 ancient wonders. Students will have 10 minutes to complete the graph. Once time is up, all writing utensils must be put down. Groups will be called on one by one to provide a review of their graphs detailing the dates, locations, and descriptions of the ancient wonders. Students will be graded based on the accuracy and presentation of the information and each group will be awarded points based on accuracy of the chart and participation. The maximum amount of crime bucks awarded will be 10. Points will be deducted based on lack of information and is to the discretion of the teacher. Each student in the group should speak and present some information with their team during this round.

Round 4:

The final round is a bonus round to find Carmen San Diego. The answer to the question will reveal the location of Carmen and her Henchmen. Each group will designate one of their teammates to represent their group for this round. Before being provided the question, students will need to “place a bid” of points for this question. Students will be presented with the bonus question:

•    Name the Modern Marvel that resembles one of the ancient wonders of the world and where was it created?

Students will be provided with multiple choice cue cards to provide an answer to the question. Students will have 10 seconds to come up with a response. Students are not allowed to deliberate with their team members or classmates to answer the question. Students with the correct answer will gain the amount of points they wagered before answering the question. Incorrect answers will result in a decrease of points based on the amount wagered.

The team at the end of the game with the most points is the winner.
