Process

1. After you have completed reading "The Giving Tree" you will visit the links below to read about ways trees help the enviornment, animals that live in trees, fruit that grow on trees, exc. Next, I want you to work with a partner and talk about your ideas and ways that you can connect 'The Giving Tree' to the World.

2. After you have researched and discussed your ideas you will choose a topic which interests you, to be the character for your story. Remember we are making 'Text to World Connections'!

3. Now that you have chosen which information you are using, I want you to complete the graphic organizer provided bellow. This will help guide your story. Think about the title, where the story will take place, details about your character, and the reason why your character benefits from trees. For example: A farmer may thank the giving tree for giving oranges to him each year.

4.  Once you have completed your graphic organizer, you're ready to start writing! Remember you are the author so take your time, and be sure to add atleast three supporting details to your story. Make sure you add a title! Example: The farmer is able to sell the oranges and make money to support his family.

5. Once you have finished writing your story, share it with your partner. Talk about how your story relates to the world. Also share your ideas about what pictures you would draw for your story,  because you will be taking on the task of an illustrator!

6. After discussing your ideas, you are ready to become an illustrator. I want you to create a picture that represents the character of the story and the things which it has benefited from because of the tree. Example: One of the things I would include in my illustration would be a picture of the farmer picking oranges off a tree.

7. When everyone has finished, as a class we will read each story and decide whether or not it should be "published" in our class book. We will also discuss all of the important things trees do for our enviornment!
