Phase 1: Who was Ned Kelly?

First, familiarize yourself with the Kelly Gang by visiting Ned Kelly History and Australian History Ned Kelly. By answering the following questions, you will have more material to use for your letter. You will also need to attach these answers to your letter when you are done.

1. Who were the Kelly Gang? List their names.

2. What did Constable Alexander Fitzpatrick do on April 15th, 1878? And what resulted because of this?

3. The term bushranger refers to Ned Kelly hiding out in these Ranges.

4. This action at Stringybar Creek led to the Kelly Gang being declared outlaws.

5. What was the Jerilderie Letter?

6. Who was Aaron Sherritt and what happened to him?

7. What happened on June 27th, 1880 at Glenrowan?

8. What were Ned Kelly's last words?


Phase 2: Writing your letter

Now that you have a better understanding of the Kelly Gang, use the information you have gathered and decide whether Ned Kelly should be freed or punished. Your letter should be at least 300 words and begin with Dear Lord Justice Redmond Barry. Remember to:

1. Introduce yourself

2. Tell why you are writing this letter

3. State whether you believe Ned Kelly should be freed or punished

4. Explain why you think Ned Kelly is a hero or a villain

5. Thank the judge for considering to read your letter
