Review of Homework Assignment:  READ Tradebook Chapters Prime Number 181 to 211.

Classroom Group Discussion Activity on Tradebook Reading:

1.  What is the main character's entire name?  Ans.  Christopher John Francis Boone

2.  What happens to Christopher in Prime # 197? Ans.  Police find  him alone on a train after he has run away from home in search of his mother who lives in England

3.  What Mathematical topic does he use as his coping mechanism to deal with his Autism symptoms in this chapter?  Ans.  He solves mathematical equations using the quadratic formula

4.  Does he use a calculator or his head? Ans.  His mind

Let's go to page 163 in our tradebook and take a look at the quadratic equations that are shown on that page.  How would Christopher classify these problems? - Easy, medium or difficult?

Pick a partner and solve these equations - I will give you some time during class and then if you and your partner do not finish, you can complete them for homework.

Objective of this Lesson:

By the end of this lesson, students will learn how to solve quadratic equations using the quadratic formula.  They will engage in a hands on student centered activity using their graphing calculator.  They will demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the concept by completing a short in-class problem set to be handed in for assessment.

Students are expected to answer 85% or more of the questions correctly. In addition, student should be able to assess which method to use to solve quadratic equations.

Anticipatory Set:

Remind students of last week's lesson on solving quadratic equations using square roots when there is no x-term and the factoring method when the equation can be factored.  Review the previous day's lesson on completing the square method when the equation cannot be factored and the coefficient of the x2 term is equal to 1 and the numbers are small.  Introduce today's lesson with a discussion about the use of the quadratic formula.  Communicate that the quadratic formula can be used to solve any quadratic equation, especially when the other three methods won't work.  Tell students they will be learning about and calculating the roots for quadratic equations using their graphical calculators.
