Music Cultures of The World

Most of the music the music education that you are likely to receive during the course of your studies will focus on what is commonly called "Western Music." Western Music refers to the musical practices of Europe and European-dominant cultures dating back to the 8th century. Western music is typically defined by the major and minor scales, instruments with notes separated by a half step, and the Western notation of music on the staff. While these are all important topics of study, it is important to know that there are many cultures in the world that don't use these systems. Some don't even write down music at all – they simply pass it down from generation to generation. This assignment is for you to discover some of the different musical cultures of the world.
