Quest for equality

Introduction

declaration_400x300_image(3).jpg

From the time Thomas Jefferson wrote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal…” in the Declaration of Independence, our nation has struggled with the notion of equality.  During your parents' and grandparents' lifetimes alone, there have been dramatic changes in the civil rights afforded to many Americans.

In this webquest, you will learn about the evolution of civil rights in the U.S. from the 1930s to the present.  Along the way, you will define the meaning of "equality" and "civil rights," both in a historical context and in your own life.
