Translation Procedures
Introduction
Translation Procedures
Translation procedures are the technical devices used to transfer the meaning of a text in one language into a text in another language. They involve essentially adding structural or lexical elements to those present in the Source English or subtracting from them; eliminating elements that are obligatory in the SL(Source Language) but unnecessary in the Target Language or with no counterpart there, where disparity between the two media goes beyond language patterns, adapting the content of the message so that the Target Language text will come as possible to the intent of the Source Language text and create a similar impact.
Example of these procedures are given below :
1. Saya Guru (adding)
I am a teacher
2. Harry tidak merokok (adding)
Harry does not smoke
3. Saya kembali ke rumah (subtracting)
I returned home
4. Paul is a bookworm (subtracting)
Paul Kutubuku
5. Perlu diketahui bahwa ... (adding + adapting)
It's necessary to know that ...
6. Saya mau melihat Jaran Kepang (adding + untranslatable)
I want to see Jaran Kepang
From the examples above you can see that the change from Source Language into Target Language calls for addition, adaptation, and untranslatablenes.
