The Chinese proverb, "give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, but teach a man to fish, and he'll eat for a life time," in my opinion describes how student self-assessment, goal setting and feedback can be used to increase student performance and teaches students how to take control of their own learning.

First of all, student self-assessment, "is a process that promotes student reflection and growth through the use of assessment lists, rubrics and/or benchmarks that aim to continually refine and improve classwork" (Assessment glossary, 2014).  The process of encouraging and implementing student self-assessment in the classroom promotes students to critically analyze their body of work based on a set of criteria.  When students look at their own body of work to determine where they are succeeding and where they need some improvement helps them grow.   When student can analyze areas they need improvement in, seamlessly transitions the students into setting a goal to improve that area.

Secondly, Goal setting allows the students, teachers and other key players to set goals with the students based on their  self assessment.  The students can easily recognize where they need improvement, set a manageable goal and determine a time frame to complete the goal.  When students can see where they are going they are more able to be an active participant in their own education.

Finally, effective feedback works in harmony with student-assessment and goal setting as a way for teachers and peers to give feedback in a way that is both meaningful and useful for the student to improve.  Based on information received from the feedback the student then has the opportunity to again self-assess and set new goals.  The process of student self-assessment, goal setting and feedback is a continuous process that is continuously refreshing based on new feedback, goals or assessments.  Finally, using student self-assessment, goal setting and feedback is teaching students how to effectively improve their own education, and the skills they obtain will be used for a lifetime.
