The Trial of the Scottsboro Boys
Evaluation
1. After reading the excerpts from the summations, answer each of these two questions in a short paragraph:
-
According to the prosecutor's argument (Wade Wright), what can you surmise that race relations were like at this time in history?
-
When the defense (Sam Leibowitz) gives his argument, is it persuasive? What does his summation seem to say about race relations in 1933?
2. In a short essay (about a page), sum up what you discovered about the similarities and differences between the trial of Tom Robinson and the trial of the Scottsboro Boys. In your opinion, did Harper Lee more than likely base Tom's trial on that of the Scottsboro Boys? Share your findings with the class.
