Welcome: The Underground Railroad
Description: For hundreds of years African Americans lived, breathed, and died in the United States under the system of slavery. Many of these slaves dreamed of freedom. The Underground Railroad was started as an escape route for those slaves seeking freedom. It used mostly between 1800-1860. This was NOT a railroad and it was NOT underground. It was a network of people working secretly together to help slaves escape to freedom in the Northern States and Canada. The slaves who were trying to escape faced many hardships and risked getting caught by "hunters" who were always looking for them. Many people helped the slaves leave the South to find freedom. It was so secret that not much information is available about it. Let's go exploring to learn more!
