Civil Rights.. Through the Eyes of a Child

Teacher Page

This Webquest has students looking at three major pieces of the Civil Rights Movement. It should be used in conjuction with a Unit on the Civil Rights Movement.  Some of the information that students will be reading about is difficult to process and it is important that students feel comfortable asking questions about what they are reading.  Also I think it is important that a class discussion about racism and segregation occurs before beginning the webquest.  I would also make sure to check in with students, especially if you are in a community in which racism is still very much present.

This also provides a great opportunity to explore historical fiction.  It is important that students have been exposed to the genre before beginning the quest.  I would recommend reading students some example of historical fiction related to the Civil Rights Movement.  Having these book avalible as they begin writing will be helpful for them to understand how the pieces should come together.
