Healthy eating basics
You may be confused about what you should and shouldn't eat to stay healthy. In fact, making healthy food choices isn't hard at all. To help prevent heart disease and some other diseases, you should eat mainly:
- Fruits and vegetables
- Grains (at least half of your grains should be whole grains, such as whole wheat, oatmeal, and brown rice)
- Fat-free or low-fat versions of milk, cheese, yogurt, and other dairy products
- Fish, skinless poultry, lean red meats, dry beans, eggs, and nuts
- Unsaturated fats
Lesson #1: Although it is O.K. to treat yourself to candy once in awhile, it is more important to eat fruits, vegetables, whole grain bread products and low-fat dairy products.
Lesson #2: Your body needs fuel throughout the day to give you energy. You especially should not skip breakfast since you have not eaten all night, and your body needs energy to get going in the morning. Saturated fat is the type of fat you should avoid to reduce chances of getting heart disease when you grow up.
Lesson #3: If you make a fist with one hand and fold your other hand over it, this is the approximate size of your heart. If you squeeze your hands together in this position about 70 times in one minute, that will give you an idea of what your heart has to do every minute of the day, every day and night for your entire life.
Lesson #4: Your heart beats over 100,000 times each and every day. It beats even more often when you exercise or when you are excited or scared. By beating more often, you are delivering nutrients even faster to your muscles. It is important to eat right so your heart keeps functioning to the MAX!
