Materials:

Acrylic paint
Cardboard
Cotton swabs
Pictures of traditional dot paintings from Australian Aborigines

Upon completion of the web quest, the students will begin planning on how they will convey their expression of life using the dot painting style of the Aborigines.

Research symbols and plan.  In your sketchbook or notebook, make notes on the symbols you would like to use for the background of your painting.  You will use these symbols in creating the story you want to tell.

Process:

  • Students should begin sketching their ideas in their sketchbook or notebook. Once they have come to a decision as to what to do, they will get their cardboard piece and draw the main subject on their canvas.

They should then draw their simple designs lightly in pencil. It is important that these designs are simple, as it is difficult to do detailed painting with a cotton swab. They should choose symbols for their composition by referring to the handout that they were given during the explanation. They could also include organic designs.

  •  A demonstration is held in the classroom were students observe the technique of how to make dots of paint. This demonstration will be done by pushing down the cotton swab into the paint and then onto the paper. Students are encouraged to mix their paints to create earth tones. Once the students have dotted in their main elements, they should begin camouflaging the picture with dots of other colors and patterns. Swirling and waving lines of color could be included.

  • As they are painting play didgeridoo music in the background to really set the mood.
