Process

You will be researching the history of Mardi Gras.  What is Mardi Gras?  What traditions take place?  What is a king cake?  What significance does it have in this celebration?  Remember what you read because tomorrow, during our Mardi Gras celebration (yes, we're having a party), you'll have the opportunity to earn beads, trinkets, doubloons, etc. by answering questions about what you read.

While reading and watching the videos, it is important to take notes.  You will be able to use these notes tomorrow, while we play our trivia game, so the more information you get, the more points you can earn for your team.

Go to the History Channel to read and watch a series of videos about the history of Mardi Gras.  Only the first 4 videos (through to the king cake information) need to be watched.

Explore the site Mardi Gras, New Orleans to read about all kinds of information behind the New Orleans celebration.  Find out about the colors of Mardi Gras and what is their significance.  What is a Krewe and how is Rex related to the Krewe?  What is a king cake, why is it called a king cake, and what does the baby inside the king cake represent?

American Catholic has all kinds of information about the history and origination of Mardi Gras.

Wikipedia has all kinds of information regarding Mardi Gras.  Explore this site here and see what traditions are held throughout the world.

Explore various Mardi Gras sites on your own.  Use Google to search things such as "Mardi Gras by the numbers" or "Statistics about Mardi Gras."

TOMORROW - I will be bringing in a king cake for each class for our Mardi Gras celebration.  We'll also need napkins and juice. Please sign up to bring in these items.  Oh, and don't forget your notes!  We will have a party where you will be able to earn beads, doubloons, trinkets, etc.  Remember to pay attention to what you read today!
