Your Role as a Citizen

Process

1.  First you will visit a website about U.S. citizenship. http://bensguide.gpo.gov/3-5/citizenship/index.html

2. Once you have read about U.S. citizenship, Click on the link that says becoming a U.S. citizen.

3.  Now try to take a citizenship quiz to see if you would be able to become and American Citizen. http://aenet.esuhsd.org/Citizenship_lessons/beginning_level.html Click on the first citizenship quiz.

4. Now learn about the rights of a U.S. citizen. http://bensguide.gpo.gov/3-5/citizenship/rights.html

5. Choose at least 3 of the freedoms and rights protected in the Bill of Rights.

6.  After you have chose three of these do some research to find out what these rights and freedoms mean. 

7. Next visit http://bensguide.gpo.gov/3-5/citizenship/responsibilities.html  to find out what the responsibilities of citizens are.

9.  Make an organized list of the things you learned about

Citizenship

Becoming a citizen

The rights of citizens

Responsibilities of citizens

10.  To finish up write a 1 and 1/2 to 2 page summary of U.S. citizenship, being sure to cover these areas..

  • The meaning of U.S. citizenship (Ex: the processes of becoming a citizen)
  • civil rights and responsibilities
  • citizenship

11.  What are some ways we as 4th graders can be good citizens in our communities, at our homes and in our classrooms.  Create a list for fun and share it with your classmates.  (note to teachers: make a classroom "good citizenship contract" and have the students tell some of their ways and ideas to be a good citizen in the classroom. When finished with the list, have all of the students sign it.)
