Fractions - Add/subtract with Same/Related Denominators (ACMNA126)

This lesson will start your learning on adding and subtracting fractions with related denominators. Some people will be revising Equivalent fractions.

1. If you have been told to, or feel you need to revise equivalent fractions, complete steps 2 and 3. If not, start at step 4.
2. Click on the link to the Pizza Fraction Game Video, then play the video with sound.
3. Once you have watched the video, click on the link to the Pizza Fraction Game. Play this twice through.
4. Read through the explanation of adding fractions from the Maths is Fun website down to the end of Example 2. Watch the pen and paper video, BUT go no further.
5. Then watch the video on Adding Fractions. Watch until the 3.35 minute mark of the video.
6. Once you have watched the video, collect a set of fraction blocks from the cupboard or collect a printout of the Fraction Wall. This may be cut into sections if you wish.
7. Collect two task sheets from the teacher, or print out from the links below in the resource section. One is adding fractions and one is subtracting fractions.
8. Using the fraction blocks or fraction wall to help you, complete the task sheets.
9. If you complete these task sheets, go to step 10. These sheets are a bit more challenging.
