Indigenous Languages

Introduction

Experts say that half of the world’s languages may be extinct by the end of the century.  People lose the ability to speak their local language, as well as the cultural knowledge these languages hold, when they switch to global languages, such as English.

Many languages have already been lost or on the brink of extinction.  Yet, there are some languages that have been revitalized and maintained.

As we learned about in Module 1, language and culture are very connected.  Therefore, when language is lost a part of that culture is lost.
