Introduction

I am the vine; you are the branches.
(John 15:5)

Jesus said to her, 'Mary!' (John 20:16)

Mary Magdalene and the holy women who came to finish anointing the body of Jesus, which had been buried in haste because the Sabbath began on the evening of Good Friday, were the first to encounter the Risen One. Thus the women were the first messengers of Christ's Resurrection for the apostles themselves.
(Catechism of the Catholic Church, 641)

The scriptures bear witness to the complete reversal of mood that the Easter event brought about in the disciples. The disciples had good reason to feel so. Jesus, the one who had given them hope, had been executed as a criminal. Yet, a few days later, contrary to all expectation, the same disciples suddenly became cheerful and outgoing. The transformation of the disciples points to the greater transformation: the resurrection of Jesus! On what was the view of this transformation based?

Easter faith isn't only about what happened to the body of Jesus, although it includes that. But if that were all, our Easter celebrations would be mere reference to the past. In addition, Easter faith is about our present union with the Risen Jesus, both as individuals and as people of God; Easter faith is about how the Resurrection makes possible the communion of the Risen Jesus with people of every time and place.

In order to understand these particular, important points, we will focus more on Mary Magdalene, who is typical of the disciples. Tradition holds her encounter with the Risen Jesus to have been the first. She is known as the 'apostle of the apostles'. Through her story, we will help you to sense what the Resurrection meant to the disciples. In particular, we will help you to understand how the Risen Jesus is with them now through exploring the words of Jesus: 'I am the vine; you are the branches'. You can also reflect to the resurrection of Jesus through Prayer times and artwork :)
