Focus:

This WebQuest focuses on the individual characteristics of elements and the general organization of the Periodic Table. The objective of the exercise is for the students to learn about how the Periodic Table is arranged and what information can be gathered.

 

Objectives/Goals:

This exercise can be completed as an introductory activity to the organization of the Periodic Table and recognizing the characteristics of common elements. Students should have a basic understanding of an atom including knowledge of atomic numbers, atomic mass, pure substances and elements.

*Students will learn the general organization of the Periodic Table.

*Students will be able to identify the general characteristics of the most common elements.

*Students will draw conclusions about common characteristics of elements.

*Students will use technology to generate creative ideas regarding the Periodic Table.

 

Resources:

Prior to this learning activity students should have access to important vocabulary terms including atoms, atomic number, atomic mass, and element. All students will need access to a computer and audio/video digital recording materials.

 

Time Required:

2 + 2 + 1 days -- 2 days researching and gathering material, 2 days creating product, and 1 day to present the material

 

Standards:

S8P1. Students will examine the scientific view of the nature of matter.
a. Distinguish between atoms and molecules.
b. Describe the difference between pure substances (elements and compounds) and mixtures.
f. Recognize that there are more than 100 elements and some have similar properties as shown on the Periodic Table of Elements.

 

S8CS6 – Students will communicate scientific ideas and activities clearly.

 

S8CS10. Students will enhance reading in all curriculum areas by:
c. Building vocabulary knowledge
Demonstrate an understanding of contextual vocabulary in various subjects.
