Order of Operations
Teacher Page
I have always gone about teaching Order of Operations by simply having students try a couple, and then simply telling them the order in which to solve problems. Students always struggle with remember the order for multiplication/division and addition/subtraction.
I am currently taking a class where an inquiry lesson is required, and when I thought about the impact a real-life scenario might have on students, this came to fruition. I am excited to try this out in my 5th grade classroom in the 2018-2019 school year. I think when students have to do the discovery, they'll build a stronger foundation than my simply "telling".
Standards
This lesson meets Ohio's Learning Standards for Mathematics, 5th Grade, 5.OA.1: Use parentheses in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with this symbol. Formal use of algebraic order of operations is not necessary.
