This is a page that represents the first assignment of the year for middle school students in general music.  As composers, the students will explore music by digitally notating it on noteflight.com.  In this way they will create projects of increasing complexity throughout the year.  This site is to serve as the starting point of the year's assignments by successfully logging on to noteflight and drafting a composition.

Standards

OBJECTIVE.
What will your students be able to do?

Adding the elements of clef symbols, key signatures, time signatures, note pitch, and note length, students will compose their own 8 note song and notate it.

ASSESSMENT
How will you know whether your students have made progress toward the objective?
How and when will you assess mastery?
We will play the music (if possible) after entering it into online music notation software and listen to students' compositions.

COMMON CORE
How will you address Common Core standards?
Math skills applied include multiplication, division and addition of fractions; English skills applied include Musical Terminology and musical literacy.

DIFFERENTIATION
How will you differentiate your instruction to reach the diversity of learners in your classroom?
How will you address your English Learners?
List the specific strategies you will use.
Music has an equal footing for EL students, but in order to differentiate by ability, some students may be allowed a greater degree of musical complexity in their compositions utilizing accidentals and small rests whereas others can complete the assignment by picking any 8 letters from A to G.
