Focus

This Webquest is designed to teach both communication and culture that are requirements in the TDSB`s curriculum.  Its objective is to help students learn about authentic french culture and how it contrasts similar Canadian contexts (i.e. Tim Hortons).  Its second goal is to improve communication through independent reading, listening, writing, and synthesizing.  To accomplish this students are asked to:

  • Compare and contrast depictions of French cafes and Tim Hortons.
  • Investigate French  cafe menus and translate one for the unilingual people at Tim Hortons.
  • Listen to famous french music.
  • Read a review and answer quetions.
  • Finish by writing a review of your own.
  • Briefly state whether or not you recomend Tim Hortons open stores in France.
  • Essential Questions

  • How does the Tim Hortons experience in Canada differ or equate to the Cafe parisienne experience in France?
  • Are Canadians more or less passionate about Tim Hortons coffee than French citizens are about wine?
  • Have online social networking sites like facebook negatively or postively impacted the Cafe parisienne cultural experience? How does this compare to the growth of Tim Hortons in Canada?
  • How do you define joie de vivre? What delivers you that feeling?
  • What major cultural differences are seen by examining these two cultures?

    Objectives and Goals

I recommend using this webquest with grades 9-10 immersion students, and grades 11-12 core French students.  It involves Objective C usage of french by challenging their auditory skills, interpretation skills, reading and writing skills, conprehention skills, analytical skills, and critical thinking skills.

    Resources and Pre-assessment

Students are expected to have already have a strong working vocabulary regarding French food and beverage.  They can comfortably interact in a restaurant or café in the target language.  Advanced fluency (objective C) students are for whom this Webquest is designed.

    Time required: 1 week.

    Work is done independently.

Technology needs -students must have a computer or reasonable accessible time to the internet.
