WebQuest
Rock Through The Rock Cycle !!!
Teacher Page
Please see the bottom of this page for the files you will need to print out for this webquest.
For this webquest:
- You will pick and assign the groups of four.
- You will assign each group member a job or jobs that will bring out their best talents.
- In this webquest, the research is divided up evenly to ensure that all group members gain a knowledge on the whole subject matter, not just a section of it.
- However, you can take research out if you need to. Each research topic or question is numbered and has a link associated to it where the student can find the answer.
- This webquest has links to two page game boards. If you would like to use a one page game board, check out these links:

7) definition of sedimentary rock, 8) definition
of metamorphic rock, 9) how igneous rock transforms
into sedimentary rock, 10) how sedimentary rock transforms into
metamorphic rock, 11) how igneous rock transforms into metamorphic rock,
12) how sedimentary rock transforms into igneous rock, 13) how metamorphic
rock turns into igneous rock, 14) definition of a rock 15) the
three main types of rock. - http://www.classzone.com/books/earth_science/terc/content/investigations/es0602/es0602page02.cfm

- Metamorphic Rock Researcher- You will research
metamorphic rocks and devise questions with the correct answers for the
following: 1) foliated, 2) non-foliated, 3) grain size, 4) metamorphism,
5) metasomatism, 6) heat & pressure, 7) where metamorphism takes
place, 8) parent rock, 9) texture, 10) cleavage, 11) gneissic banding, 12)

your choice on the metamorphic cycle (you may not use the same question
twice). - http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/earth/metamorphicrocks.html

- Sedimentary Rock Researcher- You will research the
sedimentary rocks and devise questions with the correct answers for the
following: 1) compaction, 2) cementation, 3) sediments, 4) definition
of sedimentary rock 5) the process by which sedimentary rock is
formed, 6) conglomerate, 7) fossils, 8) geodes, 9) layering, 10)
hydrochloric acid test, 11) definition of chemical sedimentary
rock, 12) definition of biochemical sedimentary rock, 13)
clastic sedimentary rock, 14) & 15) two questions of your
choice on the sedimentary rock (you may not use the same question
twice). - http://www.scienceviews.com/geology/igneous.html

- Igneous Rock Researcher- You will research the
igneous rocks and devise questions with the correct answers for the
following: 1) lava, 2) magma, 3) the process by which igneous rock is
formed, 4) intrusive, 5) extrusive, 6) definition of igneous rock, 7)
basaltic, 8) granitic, 9) grain size, 10) crystallization, 11) plutonic
rock, 12) texture, 13) determination of crystal size, 14) &
15) two questions of your choice on the igneous cycle (you may not use
the same question twice). - http://www.softschools.com/facts/rocks/igneous_rocks_facts/365/

- Mineral Researcher- You will research the
minerals and devise questions with the correct answers for the following:
1) silica, 2) quartz, 3) definition of mineral, 4) good cleavage, 5)
perfect cleavage, 6) graphite, 7) sulfur, 8) calcite, 9) the difference
between a rock and a mineral, 10) color, 11) luster, 12) streak, 13) moh's
scale, 14) main minerals that make up rocks 15) one question of your
choosing on minerals. - http://www.mineralogy4kids.org/mineral-properties

- Rock Specimen Researcher- You will research different
igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. You will devise a question
(asking these three questions: What type of rock is it? How was it formed?
What does it look like?) with the correct answers for each the following:
1) granite, 2) basalt, 3) pumice, 4) obsidian, 5) sandstone, 6) shale, 7)
limestone, 8) breccia, 9) conglomerate, 10) gneiss, 11) schist, 12)
marble, 13) quartzite, 14) slate, 15) serpentinite - Igneous Rocks:

You can have them make up their own game board, or suggest the following (bigger) templates:
For low-level learners:
Give or let them choose from one of these game board templates (the rules are already included on the board):
Click on Download Blank Board Template One and
Download Blank Board Template Two in this link:http://people.uncw.edu/ertzbergerj/word_games.html
- Have the Game boards already printed out on card stock.
- Give them cards that are already printed out with the questions on them.
- You decide: Will they cut them out? Or will you give them cards that are already cut out?
- You decide: Will they make and design their own backs for their cards? Or will you give them something to glue on?
- You decide: Will they put together their own die? Or do I need to have a basket of some already made for them to pick one from?
Pick the questions you want your students to find answers to:
- True or False: Intrusive igneous rocks cool quickly.
- Are extrusive igneous rocks formed near/above the earth’s surface
or under the ground? - What is liquid rock that spews onto or near the surface of the
earth? - Are extrusive igneous rocks fine grained or coarse grained?
- Are intrusive igneous rocks fine grained or coarse grained?
- Are intrusive igneous rocks made from magma or lava?
- Are extrusive igneous rocks made from magma or lava?
- Are intrusive igneous rocks formed near/above the earth’s surface
or under the ground? - What is the liquid rock beneath the earth’s surface called?
- True or False: Extrusive igneous rocks cool very quickly.
- What is the section of the Earth called that is lying under the
crust? - Igneous means ‘made from molten rock’. It is from the Greek word
that means ___________.
all of the answers can be found here: http://easyscienceforkids.com/all-about-igneous-rocks/
You can do the same with the other questions and answers.
