This WebQuest has been designed to fulfill the requirements of the California Physical Education curriculum, which addresses health and wellness through its standards. Its aim is to educate  students about hydration and dehydration, and to empower them to make choices that will improve their wellness. It also integrates elements from the Language Arts curriculum through the medium of writing.

Given that this WebQuest includes multiple articles, about 15 minutes worth of videos, a writing assignment, and a collaborative activity, it would ideally be spread out over two or three sessions. That could mean two sessions in the computer lab for reading, watching, and writing, and one session in the classroom for completing the activity.

Standards

The standard this WebQuest addresses comes from the California Physical Education Framework (2009), and it belongs to the standards for students in grade 5 (the WebQuest is designated for students in grades 6-8, but it is not so far below their capabilities that it would be a pointless exercise; however, it may be too advanced for students in grades 3 and 4.)

Standard 4: Students demonstrate knowledge of physical fitness concepts, principles, and strategies to improve health and performance.

4.2 Explain why dehydration impairs temperature regulation and physical and mental performance.

A good follow-up standard for a future activity would be: 4.6 Record water intake before, during, and after physical activity.

This WebQuest also integrates standards from the California Reading-Language Arts Framework (2007).
