WebQuest

Teacher Page

The subject is Hobbies
Class level: 8. to 9. grade
Duration: 2 lessons + time at home for the essay

This web quest is meant to make the student aware of what they do in their spare time and why they do it. The web quest should make them think about their hobbies in a different way and in combination with talking about something the love to do, they might produce some quality language. They might be more prone to use the English language, when they have to talk about something they are passionate about.

I created this web quest to the broad audience. Everybody has got a hobby or at least something that looks like and that is why they can relate and join the conversation. Hobbies are relevant to talk about because they are a big part of our everyday life, they are always an easy topic to talk about and the new words the students may acquire are very relevant.

The good thing about this web quest is the short preparation time. If the teacher has got an empty day it is easy to use this web quest and have the students produce some language, teamwork and a little writing. Because of the task being about their hobbies they are automatically prepared.

In the first task they are going to work individually, in pairs and larger groups and finally we have classroom teaching. It is perfect for cooperative learning because of the way they work together by producing language and writing together. When talking to each other they learn to communicate, turn-taking and how to take notes whilst engaged in conversation. If the students are placed I CL-groups they will be able to aide each other in the production of language, the better students will help the weaker students by producing language and the weaker students might have an input or a new perspective to add to the discussion.

The preparation for the teacher is minimal. He or she might have prepared a little speech about his or her own hobbies. The real work begins after the students have handed in their essays. The teacher need to find the most common and obvious mistakes throughout their essays; it might be big mistakes, fun mistakes or just some mistakes that are very frequent. On the handout, which is to be corrected by the students and then the mistake will be explained by the teacher.
