Causes of the Civil War

Here are your 5 tasks!  You will complete one for each day of the week.  Your tasks will fall into the five parts of the Social Studies.

1. American History-
       a. Make your own time-line of events that led to the Civil War.  OR

       b.Create a PowerPoint that shows both the Northern and Southern points of view OR

       c.  Choose a famous person from this time period and write a graphic biography of his or her life.

2. World History-
      a. Discover what country in Europe influenced the Southern economy and why.  Connect this country to a specific invention. Make a "connect the dots" chart that shows this relationship.

3.  Geography-
      a. Fill in the maps before and after 1850. Identify them as slave or free states. OR
      b.  Pair with a friend and pretend you are going to "Bleeding Kansas."  Each of you choose opposite sides as to why you moved to Kansas and  defend it to the class. Have them vote on who made a better defense.

4.  Economics-
      a. Make a chart, Venn Diagram, or graphic organizer comparing the economies of the North and South OR
      b. Choose one of these characters and write a letter home:
                (1) A Slave on a plantation
                (2) A Plantation owner
                (3) A Lowell factory girl
                (4) A freeman (African American) who lives  and works in the North

5.  Civics/Government- Group Day!
        a. Re-enact the Lincoln Douglas Debate            OR
        b. You are a group of followers of John Brown.  Try to recruit the class to follow him.  OR
        c.  You are newspaper reporters covering the Drew Scott case.  What questions are you going to ask him?  One of the group can be Dred Scott.
