To learn the basics about strength training you will use online articles, websites, and games to gather useful information. Below are the four tasks that will help guide you through your learning of muscle's anatomical location, exercises to activate them, basic safety, and how to help prevent injury. Navigate your way through these web pages following the directions below. There is a grading rubric located in the Evaluation tab in the menu on the left. After completing the webquest feel free to replay the games and revisit the sites to learn more about strength training. 



Task 1
Poke-A-Muscle

Directions:
1.    Complete the four stages of level on the game by identifying the location of the given muscles. 


2.    Do you think it is important to know the location of the major muscle groups before you begin a weight lifting lesson? In three to five sentences explain why you think a game like this is important or not very useful. 

3.    Using the muscle anatomy handout, color in and label all of the muscles found in the Poke-A-Muscle game. Pectoralis Major, External Obliques, Deltoid, Adductors, Quadriceps, Gastrocnemius, Hamstrings, Gluteus Maximus, Trapezius, Latissimus Dorsi, Tricep, Bicep, Abdominals. 

Task 2

Free Trainer

Directions: 

1.    Navigate the Free Trainer website and identify 3 exercises for each of the following muscles.
Hamstring
Calves
Bicep
Tricep
Pectoralis Major

2.    Research both the squat and treadmill walking exercises on the website and compare and contrast 2 differences and 2 similarities between the two. (muscles, technique, equipment, aerobic/anaerobic, etc.)

3.    After researching the anatomy and benefits of the shoulder, in your own words explain why an exercise like front dumbbell raises would be beneficial to the deltoid muscle.

Task 3 
Safe and successful strength training 
Read the article by Harvard Medical School and complete the following: 
Directions: 

1.    Complete the multiple choice Safe and Successful Strength Training assignment that's attached.


2.    What content in the article did you think would be beneficial for someone wanting to learn how to safely strength train? Are there any changes you would recommend for this article? Explain your answer in three to five sentences.

3.    Using any program you would like (Microsoft word, powerpoint, etc) design an 8 X 11 flyer that would be put in the weight room that contains what you believe are the five most helpful safety and success tips for strength training after reading this article. Be creative!


Task 4 
Warm up and cool down 
Directions:

1.    Using the word bank, complete the fill in the blank questions on the website provided.

2.    What might result from someone performing strength training exercises without properly warming up or cooling down before and after their workout? Give three examples.

3.    After reading the material on the website and going over the quiz, create a warm up and cool down plan that would would help you perform your best and remain safe and healthy. Have at least three components for both.
