Evolution of the Photographic Process

Task

20111210010422ymypu.jpg

Performance Task:

  • Please assemble into groups with 4 students.
  • Each group will be given a 35mm camera with ONE canister of film.
  • Because the film camera can only take 24 photos, technically you will have 6 photos for each.
  • Please RECORD the numbers for 6 photos (There is a"ticker" on the top of the camera.) Also record the settings you used for each of the 6 shots (Shutter Speed and Aperture.)
Requirements for the photos:
  1. Try to shoot 1 photo that demonstrates shallow depth of field (without overexposure!)
  2. Try to shoot 1 photo demonstrating extended depth of field (without underexposure!)
  3. The rest are yours! (If you take a mistake photo, it still counts as 1/6 of your photos, but will not harm your assessment.)
Work collaboratively to set up the shots and help each other with the exposure readings (as per my demonstration.) When your group has finished, you will bring the camera to me and I will rewind the film. Please do NOT open the camera at any time. (You know why!)

Reflection/Critique:
When the photos come back from the processor, you will need to find your "top" shot.
  • Be prepared to discuss (during a class critique) why you chose that image.
  • Challenges you faced when taking photos with film. (Also add any exciting discoveries to the conversation!)
Let's try it!
