Yellowstone: The Super Volcano

Working in the lab

20101008064735DyGaz.bmp

You have a long flight to Yellowstone, so what a great time to do some research. View the History of Yellowstone and its volcanoes, and remember to take note on important facts such as:

--Location

--Historical Erruptions

--Hazards

--When did this volcano last erupt?

-- What was the result of previous eruptions?

--Volcano alert level

2. Now that you have arrived in Yellowstone and have done some research, you are ready to visit The Lab. Here you will see many tools used by geologists to study the activity of the volcano.  You should record any information on how volcanologists monitor volcanoes, as well as how technologies aid in this monitoring process.   When you come across the data recorded by these tools and technologies, you should document it, as you will need to look back for analysis later.

3. The next step is to gather Information and make Predictions from geologists who have studied the volcano to help predict lava flows, and prevent disaster.

--For this section you will need to find a geographic map that shows the topography of Yellowstone National Park.

--Print this map and color in with an orange colored pencil which areas have volcanic chambers and magma beneath the surface.  (You may instead do this digitally on the computer, using a program like "Paint" or "PowerPoint")

--With a red marker circle the areas that may be in danger if the volcano erupts and causes explosive eruption and lava flows. (You may instead do this digitally on the computer, using a program like "Paint" or "PowerPoint")

--With a green marker highlight the route the affected areas should follow to safely escape destruction. (You may instead do this digitally on the computer, using a program like "Paint" or "PowerPoint")

4. Once you know the history of Yellowstone Volcano and have completed the map, you will be able to share your predictions with the other Jr. geologists on your study team. Together you will come up with one theory on when and if the volcanoe will erupt again.  You should also create a theory on what areas are in danger and what the escape routes should be.
