Day 4
The Indians and Natives
Today as explorers you will be watching Lewis and Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery.  In your journal describe what you learn about Native American tribes, particularly how they existed prior to the arrival of explorers, pioneers, and other Europeans to their lands and how they interacted with newcomers.  Invite students to recall (from the film) the type of help these tribes provided the expedition, as well as any features that provide information about their culture, values, way of living, etc.
Use the first two pages of the attachment 1 to gather additional information about the Native American tribes to include in your journal.

Day 5
Time to Publish Your Journal!
Your exploration is now complete!  It is time for you to publish your journal.  Use attachment 2 for examples from Lewis and Clark's own journal.  You can model how you format your entries with these examples.  Make sure to compile each days work into the journal (including the packing list, maps, etc). You will have time in class to make the cover and bind your journal together.  You will be sharing your favorite entry with the class.
