Once you have chosen your "persona" for the Vietnam era, you need to complete your journal.  The journal will have four entries.  Each one should be at least one well-developed paragraph.  These are the topics:

First, explain your feelings about America's involvement in Vietnam in the first place.  Now, if you are a teenager in 1970 (at the height of the war), you would have been much younger when the US first started sending troops there.  Watch javascript:nicTemp(); to learn about the early part of the war, then compose your first journal entry.  You should address the following points in your entry:

  1. Why did the USA feel the need to send help to Vietnam?
  2. What early problems did the USA experience ?
  3. What does the term "escalation" mean?
Open this javascript:nicTemp(); to write your journal.  Continue to use this link for the later entries.

Second, write about your impression of the escalation of the Vietnam War, paying particularly close attention to the Gulf of Tonkin Incident and the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution.  Watch javascript:nicTemp(); to understand that period.  Then, address the following points in your second entry:

  1. What happened in the Gulf of Tonkin Incident?
  2. What was President Johnson's response?
  3. How did the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution lead to a drawn out war with a flawed strategy?
Use the word document link above to complete your second entry.

Third, write about the public's change of attitude about the war following the Tet Offensive in 1968.  Watch javascript:nicTemp(); to help understand the turning point of the war.  Address the following points in your third entry:

  1. What was the Tet Offensive?
  2. How could the Tet Offensive be a military victory for the USA, but still cause the American public to turn against further US involvement in the war?
  3. What effect did the Tet Offensive have on the American Presidential election of 1968?
Use the word document link above to complete your third entry.

Fourth, write about your reaction to the Kent State Massacre in Kent, Ohio in 1970.  Remember, this just happened, and kids your age were killed.  Read javascript:nicTemp(); of the massacre and then javascript:nicTemp(); of the lyrics of Neil Young's song "Ohio", which he wrote in response to the massacre.  Then, compose your fourth entry. Address the following points:

  1. Why were students protesting at Kent State University?
  2. Why were so many Americans horrified at the actions of the Ohio National Guard?
  3. What are some of the lyrics that Young wrote that are particularly effective?
Use the word document link above to complete the fourth entry.
