PHASE 1

  1. Review characteristics used to classify birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and fish.
  2. Provide Dr. Friendly's letter and Data Set 1 (See in attachments | Answer key will not be provided in this phase)
  3. Allow students time to read the letter and ask any questions they have about the task they are assigned.
  4. Review the data set with the students. Ask students if there are any vocabulary words they are unsure of or any questions they may have about reading the data. Before students begin work make sure they have no further questions about the data.
  5. In teams, students work on the problem and respond to the client with requested information in letter template provided. Even though students are working in a group each child is expected to write an individual letter back to Dr. Friendly to make sure every child is accountable and contributing to the learning of the group.
  6. Students will list their group members names on their paper so the teacher can see if groups are agreeing in their decisions or not. If students are not agreeing that is something the teacher will want to discuss with the group prior to giving them the second letter and second data set.

As students are working, the teacher circulates to each team to ask the first set
of Guiding/Reflective Questions and address any issues that may arise.
Teachers can provide guidance using reflective questions to help students
determine the important factors and start thinking about how they can present their solution,
but should not guide the students in making the "right" solution.

READINESS QUESTIONS
  • What steps are you going to take to solve the problem?
  • How do you need to share your solution with the client?
  • How will you know when you have solved the problem?
  • Do you think there is more than one correct answer to what the client is asking? Why or why not?
  • What things do you need to include in your solution?
  • What is the client asking your team to do?
  • Who is the client?
  • What is the problem you need to solve?

PHASE 2

  1. Students receive Dr. Friendly's response letter, and data set 2, along with their work from part 1.
  2. As students read the second letter review with them that the new data that has been added to the data set is where the animal lives, and that now Dr. Friendly wants to have a mammal, bird, reptile, and amphibian (1 of each) in his exhibit, not just mammals.
  3. Groups test, evaluate, and revise their first procedure as necessary with the second data set and provide the requested deliverables as specified in Dr. Friendly's Response letter.
  4. After all the groups have completed their second letters to the client, the teams will create their poster and share their results with the rest of the class.
After students have completed all activities share with students the animal answer key and then reflect on the animals they chose.

PHASE 3- Reflection

After the Zoo helpers' successful task completion, the class will reflect on their project.

  • Why do you select the animals that you did?
  • How do you know if you have a complete answer for Dr. Friendly's problem?
  • Would more than one solution be acceptable for this problem?
  • What are the most important things to consider in your procedure/decision-making process?
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of your choices?
  • Do you agree or disagree with your partners' ideas? Why or Why not?
