Degrees of Comparison
Process
There are three types of comparison degrees
1. positive degree
This type can be called as equality. It means, two objects have the same appearance, size, height, weight, etc.
The structures of the sentence are :
a. 1st object + tobe + as + adjective + as + 2nd object
David is as tall as Jordan
b. 1st object + tobe + no less + adjective + than + 2nd object
My brother is no less fat than my sister
2. Comparative Degree
This type is for comparing two objects which one of objects has higher level
The structures of the sentence are :
a. 1st object + tobe + adjective (+er/+ier) + than + 2nd object
This structure is for the adjectives which have one syllable (+er) and two syllables with -y ended (+ier).
for example
tall --> taller = "tall" has one syllable --> John is taller than me.
happy --> happier = "happy" has two syllables with -y ended --> you look happier than yesterday.
b. 1st object + tobe + more + adjective + than + 2nd project
this strucuture is for the adjectives which have more one syllable that ain't within -y ended. So, the adjectives don't need to be added by -er or -ier suffixes.
for example
beautiful --> more beautiful = "beautiful" has three syllables --> Maudy Ayunda is more beautiful than Raisa
handsome --> more handsome = "handsome" has two syllables, but doesn't have -y ended. --> Ronny is more handsome than Gaga
3. Superlative
This type is for comparing one object of all. It means there is one object that has the highest level of all objects (there is no second object).
The structures of the sentence :
a. S + tobe + the + adjective (+est/+iest)
This structure is for the adjectives which have one syllable (+est) and two syllables with -y ended (+iest).
for example
tall --> tallest = "tall" has one syllable --> Everest Mountain is the tallest in the world.
heavy --> heaviest = "heavy" has two syllables with -y ended. --> This bag is the heaviest.
b. S + tobe + the + most + adjective
this strucuture is for the adjectives which have more one syllable that ain't within -y ended. So, the adjectives don't need to be added by -er or -ier suffixes.
for example
expensive --> the most expensive = "expensive" has three syllables --> That cloth is the most expensive one I've ever bought
crowded --> the most crowded = "crowded" has two syllables, but doesn't have -y ended. --> Tokyo is the most crowded city.
