The Concert is Coming!

Process

Step 1: With your group, create a theme for your concert. This will help narrow down your song selections. Your theme can be very concrete or it can be abstract.

Some example themes include: songs about springtime, songs about love, American music, etc. Be creative!

I recommend searching the internet for ideas. There is nothing wrong with finding inspiration from other teachers! That's all good teaching is. Here is one website to get you started, though I recommend sifting through several.

Step 2: Once you have a theme, each person in the group will search for and choose at least one song that fits with the theme. Good websites to utilize are-

J.W. Pepper- https://www.jwpepper.com/sheet-music/welcome.jsp

Alfred music- https://www.alfred.com/school-choral/

These websites are categorized by ensemble type, so be mindful when choosing pieces. Be sure your piece is available in SATB or SAB     arrangements.

Your program should consist of about 30 minutes of music. If this means that each person picks out more than one song, that might be necessary.

The website below to help you determine what kind of music to feature on your program. A well rounded concert has music with varying styles layered so that the audience members stay engaged. Use this website to learn about what makes a concert program good.

Step 3: Create a concert program using whatever processor you prefer. I have left some links down below to help you get started with your program. The program doesn't have to be two pages, but creativity and presentation will be a percentage of your grade for this assignment. Remember, this is the proof that you completed the project, so make sure it represents your hard work!

Step 4: Present your concert to the class. Your presentation should include an explanation of the theme/concert title, a preview of each song (audio representation), and a description of the elements of music present in the piece. You will be able to pull your program up on the projector to accompany your presentation. Song previews may be a youtube link or a recording off of the websites you found your sheet music.

Each member of the group should present the song they chose and explain why. Presentations should include a section that identifies at least 3 elements of music found in the piece. This could include an analysis of the melodic line, description of text painting used by the composer, historical importance of the piece, etc. This is a very crucial part of each person's individual grade.

After presentations, there will be class voting on the favorite program. I will take the winner into consideration when finalizing the program for the spring.
