In asking and giving permission politely, you can use ‘can’, ‘could’ or ‘may’.

For people, you know well and the same age, you can use the following informal expressions.

CAN + VERB

Can we put our book here?
Can I ask you to teach me?


IS IT OKAY IF

Is it okay if I play your laptop?
Is it okay if I go with tonight?


GIVING PERMISSION

REFUSING PERMISSION

This is a refusal of permission to something. Here are some of expressions:

Unfortunately, you can’t do that.
Sorry, I think it’s impossible for you.
I have to say no for this case.
You cannot do that.
You could not do that.
I am afraid not.
