Creating a Classroom Web Page Using Google Sites

Students will learn how to create a web page using Google Sites which they will continue to work on outside of class.

Use Google Sites to create a class website in order for you to communicate with students.

  • Open the Google App “Sites” and create a new site. 
  • Browse and select a template and then name your site
  • Using the toolbar add and edit “About the Teacher and Contact Info” section
  • Using the toolbar add a lesson and edit page for “Curriculum”
  • Continue to add and edit classroom web site
  • Share web site with the instructor and another classmate 
  • Complete the required parts of the website outside of class


Resources or Materials Needed: 

  • Desktop computers or laptops
  • Google Chrome installed onto desktops or laptops
  • Technology for Teachers class website
  • Link to Building a Website
  • Google Sites
  • Teacher computer hooked up to a projector
  • White board and pull down projector screen
  • Paper and pens for note taking
  • Each student’s Gmail address and password
  • Instructor’s pre-created Google account


Time: 1 week of classroom work

Step 1:  (Day 1) 

Instructor explains that students will be creating their own website using Google Sites.
Students need to know who their teacher is that they will be creating a classroom website for. 

Students need to meet with that teacher to get information needed for creating the website. 


Step 2:  Content Presentation 

  • Students can choose their own template and design using Google Sites.  (Browse through other class websites for examples and even find other examples on the web before beginning your own design process.) 
  • Within the teacher's classroom website, the students need to include: 
  •     Add some information to the “Home” page
  •     “About Me” page with information about themselves
  •     Edit an image or clip art of their choosing and upload to their website
