Phase 1

You will begin your recipe challenge by choosing to work by yourself or with a partner. Then, follow the steps below to review how your knowledge on fractions and multiplying. The links provided will bring you to games with fractions. You and your partner will take turns playing the games.
          1) Click on the link to play the first game on basic fractions: https://www.sheppardsoftware.com/mathgames/fractions/fractionSet.htm
          2) Click on the link to play a multiplying game.  Please choose a game that interests you: http://www.multiplication.com/games/all-games

Next, you will watch three videos that will teach you the fractions skills needed to change recipes accurately.  Please take notes as you watch the videos.

          3) Click on the link to watch your first video on multiplying fractions by whole numbers:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbAaKAR5ErM

          4) Click on the link to watch the  next video on simplifying fractions:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JrORrjqLWs

          5) Click on the link to watch the video on converting improper fractions to mixed numbers:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-imFslMIN1g

          6) Click on the link to watch your last video on changing a recipe:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQZbnH-Fpsg

After watching these videos and taking notes, you will have the knowledge needed to complete the next phase in this WebQuest.

Phase 2

Once you are done watching the videos, you can watch them more than once, you will then work with your partner or independently on a worksheet that involves multiplying and simplifying fractions and changing improper fractions to mixed numbers.  You will also search the internet to find recipes you will change with multiplication.  Here is the link to the worksheet website:

          7)  Click on the link to access the worksheet:  http://www.k5learning.com/free-math-worksheets/fifth-grade-5/fractions-multiplication-division/multiply-fractions-whole-number

          8)  Once on the website above, you will copy the problems down on a sheet of paper and only multiply the problems on that paper. When you have completed multiplying all fractions you will raise your hand and wait for the teacher to come and check your work. You must get permission from your teacher before you move on to the next step of simplifying.

          9)  After you get the teacher’s permission, you will then go through your problems and simplify all fractions that are not in simplest form. Once again, when you finish this step you will raise your hand for the teacher to come and check your work, and then give you permission to move onto the last step of the worksheet.

          10) The last step is to convert any improper fractions into mixed numbers using long division. You may at any time go back and review the videos if necessary. When you have completed the last step of the worksheet, raise your hand for the teacher to come and review your work. You will then get permission to move on to the next part of the WebQuest, changing recipes.

           11) This is the step where you will have the freedom to search the internet for any recipes you would like to work with.

           12) Find two different recipes and write the name of the recipe, the serving size, and all the ingredients and measurements down on a piece of                          paper.

           13)  Take another piece of paper to double or triple your recipe.  Show all of your work.

           14)  On a third piece of paper, write down your new recipe measurements and serving size.

Phase 3

Great job so far! You have completed phases one and two, so you are now ready for the final phase. Your school is having a cookie bake sale to raise money for new computers for the classrooms. You must bring two different types of cookies to sell, and there must be at least 50 cookies per batch. You will have to change the recipe to make sure it makes 50 cookies or more. The school is also giving away special prize for the most cookies sold, so do your best and have fun.

You will have to find two different cookie recipes to change using your knowledge of multiplying and simplifying fractions, and converting improper fractions to mixed numbers by doubling or even tripling the recipes. For those who want an extra challenge, you can create your own original cookie recipes to work with. You will write down the ingredients and their measurements from the original recipe. Then, you will double or triple each ingredient to make enough cookies for the bake sale. Create two new recipes using your new measurements and include the number of cookies you were able to make.
