Manga Face [Sketch Guide]

There is a link listed for each step, this will help you cover the relevant step, yet that particular link can be used again in the future in order to draw other sketches.

Now assemble your paper, pencils and rubber and give it a try!

Step 1 - Draw the 'skeleton'

Start your sketch by drawing a rough oval shape, joint to a conical shape at the bottom. These will represent the face and chin.

Step 2 - Draw the 'guide lines'

Now you have to draw a vertical line right in the middle of the character's face. It's position will determine the angle of the particular face. Add another horizontal guide line at the joint between the conical and oval shapes. This will help you recognise the right proportions of the eyes. Notice that the nose has to be drawn somewhere close to the crossing between the vertical and the horizontal lines.

Step 3 - Adding Eyes, Nose & Mouth

Once the guide lines are ready, it will be easier for you to determine where you should draw the eyes, nose and the mouth. This can be clearly observed in the following link.

Step 4 - Adding Hair Syle

Having determined the right spots where to place the eyes, nose and mouth, you can rub off the guide lines as they will not be needed any further. Now it is time to let your creativity do the work! Feel free to add any hair style which most interests you. In this case I sketched Rukia's favourite hair style.

 Step 5 - Completing Lines

Now that you have given your character his/her eyes, nose, mouth and hair, make sure you shade your line art properly. This will result in the picture standing out and looking neater.

 Step 6 - Completing Face

Once you are sure about your line-art, move on by adding the remaining details. In this case I added the iris, the eyebrows and other tiny details.

Step 7 - Shading and Signing

Your creation is nearly ready. It is time to add some shades and passing over minute details. Make sure you sign your work, or else it would not be fully acknowledged by others!!

Step 8 [extra] - Applying Digital Art

Once your sketch is complete, it would be cool if you also viewed it under another lens. Here I'm referring to transforming your Traditional art into Digital art. Scan your picture and import it upon an editing programme, such as Photoshop. Create a line layer, and sketch over your scanned picture using a pentablet. Step 9 [extra] - Adding Colour

Digital line-art looks awesome, yet it in my opinion, it would look even better if coloured! Use your artistic skills and imagination to add colours, shades and background to your picture! My end product was as follows.
