Aspects of the Jamaican culture (music)

Process

Step1

Teacher will introducethe lesson by allowing students to brainstorm the definition for musicalinstrument and also give examples of musical instrument. The teacher willexplain to students the types of musical instruments that are used in folkmusic. The teacher will match her instruments with the ones that they havebrainstorm to see if they are on the right track. After which the teacher willshow the different types of musical instruments used in folk songs and allowstudents to listen to the folk song “Linstead Market”.

Step 2

The students willidentify at least 3 musical instruments heard in the song. Also the picturesthat were mounted on the whiteboard

Step 3

The teacher willdemonstrate to students how to create a folk beat after which the students willchoose their favourite instruments. Students will be instructed to make musicalbeats using the instruments. The students will work together to form a musicalbeat, then each group will be allotted 5 minutes to perform the beat along witha randomly chosen folk song.

Step 4

In groups of 4,students will select a folk song, from a grab bag. Students are expected to dance,sing and dramatize the folk song they have selected. They are expected to useup the physical skills to complete this task. Each performance will be givenapproximately 5 minutes.

Step 5

Each student willreceive cards with the names of different musical instruments. They are expectedto read the information on the card aloud. After which they will be providedwith blank leaves to draw and label the picture of the instrument they havereceived on the cards.
