Day 1: Meet with your team and examine the above photos of a reenactment of food preparation at different times in Australia.  What do you notice about how the food is being prepared? How do you think that the food might have tasted that was prepared in these photos? Do you think that it was healthy?

With your team, read together the webpage below "Australian Food History Timeline."

Create your own timeline of the aspects that you think are important events and developments food and food production in Australia.


Day 2: Watch the video 'Food Journey Australia' with your team.  
This video explores how diverse the food is in the Australian city of Darwin. You may wish to assign sections of the video to various team members to make the task more manageable.  What cultural foods are described in the video?

Watch the video ' What are methods that allow food to be grown in various environments around the country? What are negatives to this kind of food production? What resources are used to power the food "machine?"


What are the economics involved in producing food today?  What are the biggest costs to the farmers in the video?

Day 3: Watch the video found below, Whole Foods vs. Processed Foods.  What are processed food vs. whole foods? What does real vs. fake food mean? Which would you rather eat?  Which do you think is healthier? How does modern food production enable the proliferation of processed food?

Watch this video of factory-made apple pies.  Compare to the original photo above of the reenactment of food preparation pre-Industrial Revolution. How is the same and different?

Day 4: Examine this webpage describing the advantages of canned foods by Crown Manufacturing. What do you think are the most important advantages?

Write a story: the life of an potato grown on a large company farm in Idaho and made into frozen french fries to be sold at your grocery store.
Draw a map illustrating the potential path of the french fries on their journey from Idaho to your city.

Day 5:

Develop a campaign to make a change to the food offered in your school cafeteria.  Do you want more or less packaged foods? Your team may choose to make a video, write a speech or design a poster.  Use information from your readings

How would you set up a system for a school-wide vote?
