Research the construction-related job which your team has been assigned.  As a team you should come up with your own method for creating each of the estimates and be ready to justify your choices.

Your team will use all of it's math knowledge, some of the "given" facts or assumptions listed below, and the US Government Bureau of Labor Statistics website to complete the following tasks:
  1. Create a price estimate for how much money you will charge to work on the house construction project full-time for 3 months. Assume you will be allowed and required to charge your client an extra 30% over your hourly/salary wage.
  2. Estimate how much money you could make in one year
  3. Describe what kind of training is required to do your job
  4. Estimate how much your training/education will cost. Include all costs that you can think of.
  5. Research what other kinds of jobs could you do with your training
  6. Estimate how much could you earn over the course of your career
  7. Estimate how many working hours it would take you to earn $20,000.  For hourly employees, use the hourly rate. For salaried/yearly employees assume that the employee will work 2250 hours in a year.
  8. Create a Prezi with your findings and present your Prezi to the class on our Interactive White Board.  The Prezi must include a description of the methodologies  (Show Your Work!!!) that you use for each of your five estimates.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes a really useful resource for finding out about lot of jobs. It's called the Occupational Outlook Handbook and can be found on the web at http://www.bls.gov/ooh/  This link will open up in a new window.

For this WebQuest, teams will assign the following roles to its members:
  • Chief Water Buffalo (Team Leader/Project Manager): keeps team on task and on schedule. Avoids being a Mr./Ms. Bossy Pants. Checks in with team members to see if they need more help.
  • Looker-Upper (Researcher 1): Along with your other Looker-Upper colleague, perform the web research necessary to complete all tasks. This could include new information that your team figures out that it needs to complete the tasks.
  • Looker-Upper (Researcher 2): same as above
  • Chief Figure-Outer (Human Computer -- can use calculators, tablets, computers, spreadsheets, or whatever other tools you want except for parents/siblings)
  • Creative Cat (Prezi author): leads on pulling together all project elements and for creating Prezi.  Organizes and reorganizes material.
Depending on the number of students participating in the project some teams may have to assign more than one role to a team member.

Note: ALL team members are responsible for the team's success in ALL phases of the project.  There will be a grade component for individual effort and performance, but that will be only one part of the larger grade.
