Developmental Steps:

Introduction:  Students will listen to a poem entitled “Who Are People in Our Community?” Students will be told to listen to the poem carefully as the teacher repeats it twice. After the second repetition, the students will be told to repeat the lines of the poem after the teacher. This will be done until the students grasp the concept of the poem.  

Step 1: There will be a student teacher discussion based on the content of the poem.  Students will be asked to name the different workers that they heard while the poem was being said. The student’s answers will be recorded.

Step 2:  Students will be given some pictures of the different workers in the community along with their names. The pictures will be large enough for all the group members to see. The teacher will ask the students to look carefully at the pictures  to see if they have ever seen any of these people in their community. The teacher will then go through the pictures with the students so that they all will know who each picture represents and their correct names.

Step 3: Students will be given two sets of flashcards. One with the names of the workers and one with the pictures of the workers. Students will be required to match the correct worker with its name. The group that gets the most matches correctly will win tokens.

Step 4: Students will remain in their selected groups. They will be asked to depict the task that these workers within the community carry out on a daily basis. In this they will use different musical instruments to enhance their presentations as needed.
