Process

1. You will be assigned to a team with other students (teams of 3-5 students). Your teacher will assign your team a style of American architecture. Your team will research and gather information about the style of architecture.

Here is a list of American styles of architecture that the class will be assigned. Your team will recieve one of these styles.

  • Colonial Style
  • Romantic Style
  • Victorian-Era Style
  • Eclectic/Period Styles

2. Next you will meet with your group. Each member of your team will need to find information about one of the sub-categories from your style. Each member will study a different area. Decide with your team members who will study which area. Some teams will have three members, some four members, and some five members depending on which style you are researching.

Here are the sub-categories.

  • Colonial Style (4 members) includes Dutch Colonial, French Colonial, Georgian, and Federalist Style (also known as Adam).

  • Romantic Style (3 members) includes Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, and Italianate.

  • Victorian-Era Style (5 members) includes Second Empire, Stick, Queen Anne, Shingle, and Richardsonian Romanesque (also known as Henry Hobson Richardson).

  • Eclectic /Period Styles (4 members) include Beaux-Arts (Classicism), Neo-Classical (also known as Classical Revival), International Style, and Prairie School (also examplified by Frank Lloyd Wright).

3. Now that you know your topic (sub-category) of architecture to study, you are ready to become an expert! You will use the following links to help you become familiar with your topic. Use the question worksheet given to you by your teacher to collect information for your WebQuest.

You will also need to copy and paste four images from the websites to a Word document. You will later share these images with your teammates.

First it is important for you to answer the following questions.

What is architecture?

Use the following link:

4. Now use the following sites to learn about the architecture style that you are discovering. Browse through the various sites listed to help you on your research. Continue answering the questions on your worksheet to help you gather information.

Most of these sites will include all the styles.

5. Next, your team will meet together to share with one another your findings. Each member will have a chance to discuss and teach each other what you have learned. Use the table worksheet given to you by your teacher to take notes from each team member.

6. Now that your team has a good understanding of your architectural style, you are each ready to begin designing your own architecture. Each member of your team will complete a pencil drawing of a facade of a building.

A facade is the front of a building.

See example of a facade of the White House.

Now here is an example of a drawing of a facade.

Your design should be influenced by the style of architecture that you studied. Do not copy a design from exactly what you saw on the Web. You need to create your own design, just as an architect would! The design should include key features from the style.

Practice completing a few sketches in your art notebook. Use the white drawing paper provided by your teacher when you are ready to begin your final design. You only need one final design per person. Your design will be completed in pencil. Rulers are available if you need one.

7. When each member's sketch is completed, it is time to prepare your team's architectural portfolio. The portfolio is created by folding the manilla tag board in half to make a folder. The outside of the portfolio should include the names of each team member.

Each member will paper clip his or her documents together. They will then put their docements inside the portfolio.

The portfolio will include the following from each team member.

  • Research worksheets completed by each team member
  • Image handouts created by each team member
  • Team sharing worksheets completed by each team member
  • Architectural designs (drawings) created by each team member

8. Finally, it is time for all the teams to meet with their boss (teacher) and their colleagues (classmates) for a firm meeting. Each team will have 5-7 minutes to present their architectural design portfolios to their colleagues to share their new designs for the firm. Good work architects!
