Rainforest Adventure!

Process

20131015042441BenyM.jpg

Step 1)

We will read: "Over in the Jungle: A Rainforest Rhyme" as a class to become more familiar with the animals in the Rainforest before we begin our adventure! After the story, I will hand out the worksheet that will help you take notes on the info you find during your journey!

Step 2)

I don't even know where the Amazon Rainforest is! If you are saying that, don't be scared! That is the point of this first step. Where exactly is this rainforest you speak of? You will look at the websites provided below to learn the location of the rainforest. Remember to take clear notes and pay close attention as this is an important part of your last step. You have two options for this step: you may either draw a map based on the maps shown to you on the website or you may explain in words where the Amazon Rainforest is located based on the information.

This third link explains more in words where the Amazon Rainforest is for those of you who enjoy using words over pictures
o TIP: Leave the webpage of the map up as a second tab so you can look back at it when working on your final project!

Step 3)
The first layer we will look at is the FOREST FLOOR. Take a look at this website! This website can be used for all forest levels but I will be looking for info that you have found for the other layers from other websites. On the very bottom of this page are facts about the forest floor and the plants and animals you will find. Use this part of the website to fill in your notes.

Here too you will find information for every layer, use this information to fill in your notes for other layers but really focus on the forest floor which will be in the last slides of the PowerPoint.

Step 4)

Come see me! Bring your notes page and meet me in the back of the room. We will go over what you have learned so far and clear up any questions you may have. I will also ask YOU a few questions about what you have learned so far.

Step 5) The second layer of the rainforest is called the UNDERSTORY. I have created a Prezi presentation to go over the basics of the understory. Use the guided notes that I have provided you for the basic facts of the understory as well as some of the animals in the understory.

Click on the link to go to the prezi-

Next- click on this link-

The second link will provide more plants and animals that can be found in the understory. For your project, you are to name three different plants and three different animals that can be found in each layer so you will need this link as well.

Step 5)

I have provided each of you with a post-it note. Write at least one question you still have on that post-it-note and place it on the top of your computer. Once I see the post-it-note I will come and help you clear up the question. Until then, take a look at this video about the Amazon!

Step 6)

The third layer of the Amazon Rainforest is the CANOPY.
I want you to go to the website and click the arrow button on the bottom of the screen three times until you see “The Canopy”. List in your notes three animals that you find in the canopy.

To finish this section, go back to the first website on the third step, or click here!

Step 7)

Raise your hand! I will pair you with a friend that is at the same spot, I want you to compare notes with your friend. Also, tell your friend the most fun thing you have learned so far.

Step 8)

The top layer of the Amazon rainforest is the EMERGENT layer. Use the next three websites to learn about plants and animals in the Emergent layer.

Step 9)

FINISHED! Well with the research anyway. When you get to this step, come find me. We will talk over your project choice and create a plan of action. I will then group you with two other students. You will work with each other to bounce off ideas and any questions but you will each create your own project.
