PROCESS

SECTION 1:- Adding fractions having the same denominators

1.     Method

For adding fraction with like denominator,Add the top of the (numerator) of each number and write it over the common denominator

Example 1.                 2/5 + 1/5 = (2+1)/5 = 3/5

Example 2.                 9/11 +1/11= (9+1)/11 = 10/11

3.     Review the process of addition of fraction by reading and practicing the process. Scroll down and do 10 practice problems at the bottom of the website �Adding Fractions�  

SECTION 2:- Adding fractions with unlike denominators

                 Review:- Before going to the method let us review LCM (Least Common Multiple)

 Qus. 1 Find the LCM of4 and 8

             Multiple of 8 are 8, 16, 24, -------

             Multiple of 4 are 4, 8, 12, 16, -----  

            8 is the least common multiple of 4 and 8

           So LCM of 4 &8 = 8   

Qus. 2. Find the LCM of 16 & 32

            Multiple of16 are 16, 32, 48, -------

            Multiple of32 are 32, 64, 96, --------

            32 is the least common multiple of 16 & 32

            So LCM of16 and 32 = 32

1.Method

       Step 1: Find a common denominator

       Step 2: Make equivalent fraction

       Step 3: Add the numerator

       Step 4: Reduce the fraction if needed

 Example : Add 1/4 and2/8

                 1/4 + 1/8= 3/8

LCM of 4 and 8  = 8       1/4= 2/8    so  1/4+ 1/8 = 2/8 +1/8 = 3/8

Example : Find 3/16 + 9/32 ?

                   3/16+ 9/32 =6/32 +9/32 =15/32
