Great American Reads

Process

I grew up in northwestern New Mexico and always loved the Tony Hillerman murder mysteries that were set in the clear, high-desert landscapes that I hiked in daily.  I remember as a high school student being completely creeped out by the thought of skinwalkers.

To read is to fly: it is to soar to a point of vantage which gives a view over wide terrains of history, human variety, ideas, shared experience and the fruits of many inquiries.                                                                                                          - A C Grayling, Financial Times

The Project:  Here you will find the rules and guidelines for your independent reading project.

Step One:  Getting Ready

         Choosing a book
  • The book should be by an American author.
  • Limit yourself to traditional "literature" choices. (Manuals for how to fix your car will not be approved.)
  • The book must be approved by your parents/guardians and your teacher.
  • The book must be one you have not read yet.
  • Challenge yourself!

         Choosing a partner
  • Your reading partner must be an adult.
  • Your reading partner can be a parent/guardian but does not have to be.
         Making a plan
  • Research book choices
  • Make sure the book is approved
  • Make sure you can get the book
  • Decide when to start the project (1st semester project--due 4 weeks from when you start.)
Step Two:  Enjoying the book

          Interacting with the book
  • As you read, reflect on interesting ideas, characters, quotes, plot twists, details, techniques the author uses.
          Interacting with your partner
  • Through email/blog/face to face tell your partner what you are thinking about.  Ask questions.  Tell each other what you like.  Wonder.
  • Remember you will have to show your book conversations for a final grade.

Step Three:  Reflecting on what you learned

  • Prepare a two minute power point presentation for the class about your book/author.

          Who is the author?
          What did you learn?
What do other people (including your partner) say?
